The Parliament of Victoria has just released a discussion paper: ‘No dancing whilst drinking’: Challenges and opportunities for Victoria’s live music venues.
The report highlights several major challenges facing the sector, including soaring insurance premiums, inflation-driven cost pressures, and shifting audience behaviours—particularly among younger people, who are drinking less and attending live music events less frequently. While the sector’s overall revenue has rebounded since COVID, small and medium-sized venues continue to operate under significant strain.
The report underscores the urgent need for structural reform and calls for targeted government intervention, particularly in areas such as insurance, sustainable business models, and audience development.
The report mentions 'Agent Of Change', however really fails to investigate the different models being utilised across the nation and how successful the 'Special Entertainment Precinct' model has been, in comparison to the difficulties of the Agent Of Change model.
Creative Workplaces was established through the National Cultural Policy ‘Revive’ for artists, art workers and arts organisations to promote and enable fair, safe and respectful workplaces in the arts and culture sector. They have recently shared their newly published discussion paper on work arrangements in creative industries.
The purpose of the paper is to invite feedback on issues related to work arrangements and pay for artists, arts workers and arts organisations.
They are inviting feedback from all current, past and emerging artists, arts workers and arts organisations, and those who have relevant knowledge and experience, to respond to the questions in this paper.
Submissions can be made through their online form until 30 May 2025. Anyone needing an alternative way of making a submission is encouraged to contact the team (workplaces@creative.gov.au).
